Properties in Algebra

Standards

WIDA ELP Standard 5: English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic
success in the content area of MATHEMATICS (LoMA)

GLE's; GSE's
M(F&A)-6-2: Demonstrates conceptual understanding of algebraic expressions using letters to represent
unknown quantities to write linear algebraic expressions involving any of the four operations and
consistent with order of operations expected at this grade level; or by evaluating linear algebraic
expressions (including those with more than one variable); or by evaluating an expression within
an equation (e.g., determine the value of y when x=4 given y=3x-2).

NETS 2: Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
a. design or adapt relivant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to
promote student learning and creativity.

Purpose:

Content: Students will be able to identify the Distributive Properties using the Commutative, Associative, Additive Identity,
and Multiplicative Identity.

Linguistice: Students will use the correct terms when explaining what property to use when solving an addition,
subtraction, or multiplication equation.

Distributive Property Commutative Property Associative Property
Additive Identity Multiplicative Identity

Communicative: Students will identify an example of a property being named.

Materials

pencils, index cards, laptop, projector, homework practice sheet

Methods/Procedures

1. Have a student "distribute" pencils to everyone in the class.
2. Have another student "distribute" 3 index cards to everyone in the class.
3. "Does it matter which side of the room the pencils or index cards are distributed from? NO"
4. Begin the Prezi presentation of "Properties in Algebra."
5. Introduce each property and discuss.

Evaluation/Checking for Understanding

In the Prezi equations are displayed. Students have index cards with properties and identities written on them.
Give student time to view the equation and then hold up the card for the correct property or identity that is displayed.

Independent Practice/Homework

Students will complete a similar sheet for homework.
